East of the Bernese Alps rise the mountains of CENTRAL SWITZERLAND. They may not be as famous as their neighbours, but they're no less impressive, and few regions of the Alps contain greater contrasts. The valleys that flow between these mountains reward the visitor with a wonderful assortment of walks, while resorts such as Lucerne, Brunnen, Altdorf, Andermatt and Engelberg ensure there's no shortage of accommodation.
Fanning out from the hub of the riviera-like Vierwaldstättersee (the Lake of Lucerne), a choice of peaceful valleys lead the walker into regions of delight. In the valleys lie snug villages and hamlets rarely visited by the motorised tourist. On their hillsides cheese is still made in time-honoured fashion, with a background of impressive rock walls, snowfields and glaciers. No less than 90 of the region's best walks are described in Central Switzerland: A Walker's Guide.
