One of the toughest multi-day Alpine treks is the GR54 which makes a circular tour of the Écrins National Park in the French Alps. Known as the Tour of the Oisans it takes from 10 to 13 days to complete this 176km circuit, and the scenery is exciting throughout, for after the Mont Blanc range these are the second highest mountains in France rugged, challenging and immensely rewarding.
Accommodation on the tour is as varied as the scenery, ranging from homely gîtes and mountain huts to small hotels, all in delightful settings that add much to the trekker’s experience. The Tour of the Oisans divides the route into 10 stages (with alternative options), but a 13-day itinerary is also outlined for those who wish to have shorter days.
