Okay, instead of multi-day trekking, maybe you prefer to have a valley base for a few days and go walking from there. And why not? The 'centrist' view is a worthy one, for by concentrating on one valley or district you can really get to know it well, and I've spent some amazing weeks doing just that, sometimes leading groups in the mountains, at other times researching walks for guidebooks.
Here's a selection:
The ÉCRINS NATIONAL PARK south-east of Grenoble contains the highest mountains in France outside the Mont Blanc range. Better known for its hard climbing, the valleys of the Écrins National Park nonetheless have a wealth of great walks to enjoy, and a diverse assortment of huts (refuges) to visit from such centres as Bourg d'Oisans, La Grave, Ailefroide and La Bérarde.
Each of the five valleys described has its own unique qualities, and this guidebook sets out to discover the best walks and finest viewpoints in each. A total of 70 routes will keep even the most energetic of walkers content for several holidays.
This is the 2nd Edition of the ÉCRINS NATIONAL PARK published in May 2008 which was last published in 2001 and has been redesigned with new colour maps and photographs throughout.
