Third in popularity with independent trekkers is the LANGTANG region north of Kathmandu which, with the holy lakes of GOSAINKUND can be linked with HELAMBU to give a rich variety of trekking experiences.
Go in the spring and you'll wander through fabulous rhododendron forests before arriving in a Himalayan wonderland. Go in the autumn and you'll have eye-catching views almost every step along the trail, and gaze at mountains whose names may mean little before you go, but whose obvious appeal will remain etched in memory for years after.
When John Manning, deputy editor of TGO magazine, trekked in Langtang he found he had to rely more on this guidebook, than on his Sherpa guide whose knowledge of the area ran out beyond the last of the lodges! "Detailed route descriptions, distances and timings ... aided daily planning, while the excellent colour and black and white pictures helped us (and Nima) keep track of progress. If you're heading for this area," he concluded, "this guide is as essential a part of your kit as Lomotil and Fuji Provia. Take a spare copy for your Sherpa guide."
