A Trekker's Guide
What about other great treks in the Nepal Himalaya? Well, there are many - almost too many for one trekker's lifetime.
Undoubtedly two of the very best are the Manaslu Circuit and Kangchenjunga treks, both of which are reasonably demanding and, being located in semi-restricted areas of Nepal, are limited to organised groups who must carry their own provisions and therefore trek with the full complement of porters, sherpas, cook, etc. But what magnificent treks they are!The Manaslu region lies immediately east of the Annapurnas in Central Nepal, the start of the trek being Gorkha, an historic little township midway between Kathmandu and Pokhara. From a ridge crest above the town one gazes north over an agricultural landscape of terraces filled with rice, millet or barley, to the vertical arctic wall of the Manaslu Himal.
The basic circuit takes about 21 days. First through the gorges of the Buri Gandaki on the eastern side of the massif, then alongside Manaslu itself before bearing west to cross the 5213 m / 17,103 ft Larkya La close to the Tibetan border, then down to the Marsyangdi whose valley trails are shared with those of the Annapurna Circuit. Three further trekking options are given, each of which is very special in its own way.
MANASLU: A TREKKER'S GUIDE like the other guides in this series, is written as a companion for the trail. Although it records the paths, villages, valleys and mountains, it is not intended to take from the reader any of the mystery or surprise that trekking in such a visually exciting region has to offer.
